Every child deserves the best start in life

What does the index measure?
The Australian Early Development Index (AEDI) is a population measure of how young children are developing in their community.

It measures five key elements:

  1. Physical health and wellbeing
  2. Language and cognitive skills
  3. Emotional maturity
  4. Communication skills and general knowledge
  5. Social competence
These are important areas of child development and good predictors of adult health, education and social outcomes.

Investing resources into children's early years brings life-long benefits to children and to the whole community.

Government commitment to the AEDI
The Australian government has invested $21.9 million to 30 June 2011 to implement the AEDI nationally.

Child Australia and the AEDI

Child Australia is pleased to be part of this project. We now have a "Local AEDI Champion' to help inform communities about what this measure means and how we can help improve outcomes to ensure the wellbeing of children.  We will:-

  • work with the community where high levels of vulnerability are shown by the 2009 AEDI results.
  • work with local community groups to support early childhood initiatives .
  • support existing community networks and where there are none, we will take a lead role in developing them.
For more information about the program, please contact AEDI Champion:

The AEDI is funded by the Australian Goverment and is conducted by the Centre for Community Health (at Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne and a key reserach centre of the Murdoch Children's Research Institute) in partnership with the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research, Perth.
