Every child deserves the best start in life
What does the index measure?
The Australian Early Development Index (AEDI) is a population measure of how young children are developing in their community.
It measures five key elements:
- Physical health and wellbeing
- Language and cognitive skills
- Emotional maturity
- Communication skills and general knowledge
- Social competence
These are important areas of child development and good predictors of adult health, education and social outcomes.
Investing resources into children's early years brings life-long benefits to children and to the whole community.
Government commitment to the AEDI
The Australian government has invested $21.9 million to 30 June 2011 to implement the AEDI nationally.
Child Australia and the AEDI
Child Australia is pleased to be part of this project. We now have a "Local AEDI Champion' to help inform communities about what this measure means and how we can help improve outcomes to ensure the wellbeing of children. We will:-
- work with the community where high levels of vulnerability are shown by the 2009 AEDI results.
- work with local community groups to support early childhood initiatives .
- support existing community networks and where there are none, we will take a lead role in developing them.
For more information about the program, please contact AEDI Champion:

The AEDI is funded by the Australian Goverment and is conducted by the Centre for Community Health (at Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne and a key reserach centre of the Murdoch Children's Research Institute) in partnership with the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research, Perth.
