West Pilbara Mobile Children's Services
CHILD Australia’s West Pilbara Mobile Children’s Service is funded by DEEWR to provide a mobile playgroup service for young children and families in the West Pilbara. The program aims to reach families whose access to other community services is limited. Play activities are directed towards preparation for school, with a focus on participating in routines and practising “readiness” skills. Families also have the opportunity to learn about child development and find out more about children’s services available in their community.
Our Mobile team travel extensively in the West Pilbara Mobile Children's Services "Butterfly" van to provide play experiences to families and children in the region. Their work in non-traditional settings demonstrates both initiative and innovation in the way that they take “playgroup to the people”.
Demonstrated Success
The following examples showcase the breadth of this program and our linkages with other community agencies and organisations.
West Pilbara Mobile Children's Service & Kalarra House
The West Pilbara’s Mobile Children’s Service has collaborated with Kalarra House, a new aged care facility in South Hedland, to provide a monthly cross-generational play session. Kalarra House coordinates transport for family members and CHILD Australia provides supported play sessions. Feedback from staff and residents has been overwhelmingly positive with more than 19 children regularly engaged.
Play sessions with Warrak Maya Aboriginal Health Services
Play sessions are conducted with the Warrack Maya Aboriginal Health Services’ monthly clinic. Clinic staff report increased ease of health checks with the children being less stressed because of their participation in play activities.
"Plays in the Park" at Cemetary Beach
Plays in the Park sessions at Cemetery Beach, Port Hedland are attended by mothers and children from the Women’s Refuge. This provides opportunity and a safe environment for much needed play activities and positive interactions. Children from the Hospital Children’s Ward also participate in these sessions when well enough to do so.
The Mobile Van has also visited and supported more traditional children’s services in Hedland, Karratha, Wickham and Roebourne, particularly the two Multifunctional Aboriginal Centres.
