Wheatbelt Regional Childcare Support Project
Launch of Wheatbelt Early Childhood Planning Tool Kit
Child Australia and the Wheatbelt Organisation for Children’s Services (WOCS) worked in partnership on the ‘Wheatbelt Regional Childcare Support’ project from 2009 to 2010.
This project was funded by the Wheatbelt Development Commission through the Royalties for Regions - Regional Grants Scheme. Nola Poland, Project Coordinator, provided communities and early childhood care services with: support, advocacy and representation to all levels of government. In addition, resources were developed and distributed to support services and communities wishing to establish a service, review an existing service and plan for the future childcare needs of a community.
The first stage of the project was to map existing early childhood care services in the Wheatbelt, identify service gaps and identify the current types of early childhood care services in operation in the Wheatbelt. This resource paper is available on the WOCS website www.wocs.com.au.
 The second stage was the development of the Wheatbelt Early Childhood Planning Tool Kit. The aim of the planning tool kit is to encourage communities and existing child care services to take a proactive approach to meet both the current and future early childcare needs of a community. The toolkit encourages working together, forming partnerships and developing services to meet the evolving childcare needs of a community. It is available to download from the Child Australia and WOCS website.
The tool kit was developed as a “process to follow”, with templates provided for use throughout the planning process. Included in the tool kit is information regarding the models of childcare, funding associated with the different models, operating requirements, management structures suited to each model, strengths and weaknesses of each model and potential funding sources.
