Pre-kindy and Occasional Care Inclusion Project WA

CHILD Australia Pre-Kindy & Occasional Care Inclusion Project WA provides support to eligible pre-kindy (non school based) and occasional care programs to build their capacity to create an environment and opportunities for children with a disability to participate.  This project is funded by Australian Government Literacy, Numeracy and Special Learning Needs Programme for Children with Disabilities (Special Education Non-Government Centre Support-NGCS).

In this program, additional needs are defined as:

  • children with a diagnosed physical, sensory, neurological or intellectual disability, or a learning impairment; and
  • children undergoing continuous assessment for a disability.

Program staff may also contact the Project Coordinator concerning other children if they, staff or family have some developmental concerns about a child.

The aim of the Pre-Kindy & Occasional Care Inclusion Project WA is to provide advice, resources, and access to a range of practical supports so that the service can provide inclusive environments for all children.

Eligibility for Inclusion Support

Programs that are eligible to access inclusion support include:

  • pre-kindy programs (non-school based); and
  • occasional care services*.

Ineligible program types:

  • school operated pre-kindy, playgroup, other programs;
  • early intervention programs;
  • community playgroups and programs where parents attend with their children on an ongoing basis; and
  • Australian Government Approved Child Care Services.

*For the purposes of this project, occasional care services refers to licensed services eligible for a state-managed operational grant (as defined by the Department for Communities).

Demonstrated Success

The success of this project has been enhanced by the development of strong relationships with Children’s Services Officers (CSOs) from the Department for Communities and the Disability Services Commission’s Local Area Coordinators (LACs).

In December 2007, CHILD Australia was pleased to be associated with Early Childhood Intervention Australia’s presentation of a Certificate of Excellence to Pat Hope, Director of the Joondalup 3’s Plus Program. Nominated by Julie Bloor, Pat was deservedly recognised for her commitment to, and advocacy for, the inclusion of children with disabilities in pre-kindy programs.
