Professional Support Coordinator - WA & NT
Child Australia is funded by the Commonwealth Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) to manage the Professional Support Coordinator programs in Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
These programs provide professional development and support to child care workers in Australian Government Approved Child Care Services (AGACCS) and aim to improve the quality of care provided in child care settings.
Child Australia’s Professional Support Coordinators in Western Australia and the Northern Territory (PSCWA and PSCNT) respond to current and emerging professional development and support needs in the child care sector. PSCWA and PSCNT work closely with other peak organisations to meet professional development and support needs of eligible child care services. In addition, PSCWA and PSCNT share knowledge and resources with their counterparts in other jurisdictions.
The objectives of PSCWA and PSCNT are to provide professional development opportunities that are based on latest research evidence and best practice in order to:
- lead professional practice and drive quality improvement;
- support child care services implement the new Early Years Learning Framework;
- assist services and their staff attain or exceed quality standards set by the Federal Government’s National Quality Framework;
- prepare child care professionals for the increasing expectations that National Quality Framework accreditation brings;
- enhance and update child care workers’ knowledge and skills in existing and new areas of practice; and
- provide professional development to support the inclusion of children from diverse backgrounds, including indigenous children, children with disabilities and children from CALD backgrounds.
The following child care services are eligible for professional development and support from the PSC.
Child care services approved for Child Care Benefit, including:
- Long Day Care services;
- Outside School Hours Care (including vacation care);

PSCWA and PSCNT work closely with other agencies, such as Inclusion Support Agencies, the Indigenous Professional Support Unit, State and Commonwealth Government Departments and peak bodies to ensure an informed and collaborative approach to service delivery. This is particularly important in WA and NT where many services operate in remote areas where access to support is limited. The PSCs in both regions are committed to flexibility and innovation in their responses to requests for support, a feature critical to providing effective services to remote areas.
In the areas of Professional Development, the training needs of early childhood education and care staff are identified annually through a state-wide survey, the results of which are used in developing a scheduled training program or “Calendar”. Courses are offered throughout the state or territory, with costs subsidised by the PSC. Customised training is also available, the need for such support usually being identified as a result of contact made with the PSC or an Inclusion Support Facilitator. This form of training is tailored to a service’s specific needs, but can include other services if similar PD needs have been identified.
