The skills that we need to help highly anxious children are enhanced by developing an understanding of our own responses to stress. Anxiety is a normal human emotion that helps to keep us safe. When anxiety is out of control it can impact on a child’s behaviour and emotions. Treating this as “naughty behaviour” increases the stress for both adults and the child. It does not improve the situation.
Understanding anxiety and how to manage our own stress can help us to better understand the cycle for children in our care.
Learning Outcomes:
- The cycle of anxiety
- Strategies to self- regulate
- The stress hormones and the impact on our body, what we can change and what we can’t.
